I think that there is a general lawlessness that pervades the Dublin streets. Focussing on cyclists is not the answer, especially since there is so little investment in education on the topic of where cycling is permitted. A lot of cyclists are genuinely ignorant that they are not permitted on pathways. Many motorists are genuinely convinced that cyclists should give way to them. Pedestrians walk blindly across roads and disregard approaching traffic, endangering themselves and others.

The Gardaí are responsible for enforcing the law not Dublin city Council. I propose the setting up of a DPA (Dublin Pedestrian Association). It could start with reclaim the footpath Demo's with pedestrians walking in line shoulder to shoulder to force lawbreakers off our pavements.

@alex894557 I don't think the Gardai are the one stop shop for everything wrong in the country. Things like cycling on the footpath or on pedestrian streets should be taken over by Cycling Wardens just as there are Litter Wardens. On the spot fines should be lowered to reflect the fact that a bike is less dangerous than a car. There are that many cyclists breaking the law that a few months of fines would pay for better cycle lanes. Of course given the quality of our politicians..

A good way to combat this is to carry a stick and shove it through the front whell when they are passing

@alex894557 A good way to combat this would be to lay the blame where it really lies: Dublin City Council. They get paid with your money to run the city. It's up to them to enforce rules and regulations. It's their job to look at what's happening and decide what's best to strike a balance between the needs and safety of all who live and work in the City of Dublin.

How very Irish! Disregard for the law starts at the top with politicians and bankers, and comes all the way down to the streets, "if I can get away with it why shouldn't I do it?"

@josmcg That's the overall point. If you let a situation get out of control people will do whatever they think can get away with. For cyclists in Dublin that means "do whatever you like". Dublin is a city with on one running it.
