Mike Pennington at Meguiar's shows us what can happen with improper technique with an extreme example.

This is a small clip from a ton of other footage taken. I am still editing that footage.

  • The whole point was to show people who had never used a rotary before that it isn't as "bubba proof" as a DA. People do all sorts of dumb things - like pushing wood through a table saw while turning and talking to a friend - usually with horrible consequences.

For those of you really slow on the uptake, this was a demonstration in what NOT to do. Heck, there should be video showing what happens when you scrub bird droppings with a ScotchBrite pad - horrible idea but I've seen people do it.

  • Rotaries are not as bad as people say.. I dared to try a rotary with a wool pad on my beloved car and a foam finishing pad on a DA and literally turned my car into a mirror. But Im the kind of person that gets the feel for machines pretty quick but its still a "learn as you go" process.

    Some tips:

Rotary, wool pads wont leave a mirror finish remember that, its only to get rid of the scratches, use lubrication (i used meguiars detailer)

  • im trying to master the PC 7424 before i step up to a rotary. the whole burning paint thing scares me.

  • @sanata2001 if you do what this guy did the metal is heated up and warped i wouldn't worry about the paint.. body work is needed

  • when this happens a spot down to the primmer or metal I guess this needs a paint over the entire hood or trunk whatever, but can a good touch up spray on or brush on work then a light hand buffing?

  • @IDBNVS2 I suppose your so intelligent that you can tell us all why meguires put alot of there products in coloured bottles and then please discribe the cutting compounds used in your last polish you used on your car and what grit scatches does a wool pad take out???????????????/

  • @ozzierotex I don't know anyone who goes over 1750 and even 1750 is an EXTREME case scenario. Usually 1500 tops! Using the most aggressive pad (such as the reg Meguiars) and a stupid high speed of 2400 and angling the machine while holding it in one spot will obviously do what the video showed us. Common sense is the word.

  • i am tempted to buy a new dewalt rotary and mastercraft DA

  • but if u use a rotary buffer correctly i get better results.

  • D.a. Buffers don't burn the paint like rotaries.

  • well im no expert but i think most depends on the kinds of products you are using, and the type of pad too, basically many DA and Rotaries do the same things, random orbits and revolutions. You can look for a machine that handles low speeds to stay on the safe side, and to get the mirror finish pay attention to the conditions of the paint, if its too scratched use a compound with a wool pad but be careful not to use something too harsh, and then work your way through less abrasive products and

  • continued: pads until you get to the finessing stage, which is where im sure you will be very satisfied with your work if done correctly, good luck and still do some research to stay on the safe side.
