The sixth part of my series comparing Gould's 1955 and 1981 recordings of the Goldberg Variations. These are the two recordings of the fifth variation.

The rest of the variations (and, when relevant, commentary) will be up soon.

  • I have an obsession!

  • I keep the first one. The recording is not so shiny

  • For those who are interested, a continuation of this series will be made available on my channel.

  • @BalthasarMA, I agree, he was handsome.

  • I like the 1981 recording the most. It is much more reflected and precise.

  • Do you actually consider the 81's version much too fast? Wierd. His tempo is slower than yours...

  • Thanks for the video. I just commented on it.

  • Hey bachscholar, would you care to comment/criticize/feedback on my 'guitar version' of it. Its in the "video responses"? I ask you because I've seen your videos and it would be nice to get feedback from a well trained musician. Thank you.

  • More pronounced left hand in the 81 version, drier and less pedal; I prefer the more singing, spontaneous, joyful 55 version.
