World Class Marathon, ING NYRR

Bhutan is a tiny, remote and impoverished kingdom nestling in the Himalayas between its powerful neighbours, India and China.
Almost completely cut off for centuries, it has tried to let in some aspects of the outside world while fiercely guarding its ancient traditions. Development philosophy is Gross national happiness, The concept of gross national happiness (GNH) was developed in an attempt to define an indicator that measures quality of life or social progress in more holistic and psychological terms than gross domestic product (GDP).
The term was coined in 1972 by Bhutan's former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who has opened up Bhutan to the age of modernization, soon after the demise of his father, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. He used the phrase to signal his commitment to building an economy that would serve Bhutan's unique culture based on Buddhist spiritual values. At first offered as a casual, offhand remark, the concept was taken seriously, as the Centre for Bhutan Studies, under the leadership of Karma Uru, developed a sophisticated survey instrument to measure the population's general level of well-being. The Canadian health epidemiologist Michael Pennock had a major role in the design of the instrument, and uses (what he calls) a "de-Bhutanized" version of the survey in his work in Victoria, British Columbia. Ura and Pennock have also collaborated on the development of policy screening tools which can be used to examine the potential impacts of projects or programs on GNH. A global event with more than 2 million spectators from around the world and an International television audience of hundreds of million more, The ING NYC Marathon provides widespread exposure for numerous charities, including opportunities to raise money and awareness for worthy causes. Last year 2009, 6,800 Charity Athletes representing more than 80 organization aim to raise $21 million through their participation in the marathon.

The runners from all 50 states and more than 140 countries made their way along the 26.2-mile course, professionals and amateurs alike took beauty and diversity of city's five boroughs while being cheered on by over 5.6 million spectators.
The hustle, the bustle, the vitality, the energy, our NYRR team, the city agencies, the fans, the charities, the sponsors, the broadcasters, the volunteers, the musicians, the international, national, and the best pros in the world all come together on this very special day to celebrate 40th ING NYRR Marathon.
For some, careers have been made. For others,demons have been exorcised. For most, dreams have been fulfilled.
The ING NYC Marathon is the last of 12 events make up the 2008-2009 World Marathon Majors (WMM) series, the third two-year cycle since the WMM's inception in 2006. As always, the series includes the world's five most prestigious annual marathons; besides New York, they are the Boston Marathon, the Virgin London Marathon, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and the real -Berlin Marathon. The WMM also includes any Olympic or IAAF World Championships marathon that fall within the two-year-span, and thus the 2008-2009 series incorporates the 2008 Beijing Olympic Marathons and the 2009 IAAF World Championships Marathons in Berlin.
