Back in 2005 Jamaal and I visited my dad in North Carolina. We went to a friend's house and there in her living room, Jamaal demonstrated the grass dance. It was like grass dancing unplugged in that there was no drumming, no singing and he was dressed in jeans. However, his spirit shone through. Everyone in the room was taken with his passion, intensity and the fluidity of his movements. I filmed him this time performing the grass dance for a class in France studying Native American culture. His spirit is still shining.

  • I've seen Jamaal do this dance in a tiny cabin in the remote Wind River Range of Wyoming. It was Christmas and thirty degrees below zero outside. He's an amazing kid. We were 50 miles from the nearest town. We snomobiled into the place and he was only six!

  • OMG!!! Molly, you're famous! I miss you little man! Love your auntie Julie in Idaho. Hi V!

  • I like this, and I prefer the traditional grass dance before the contemporary. Good education in the latter part of the clip. :)

  • i love this, he is really good, i've seen alot of grass dancers who don;t get it and tend to spin or jump too much but he seems to understand and especially dance like someone that can really surprise alot of people. remember you are the grass and how does grass flow in the wind....

the respect he shows makes me proud that we have someone as young as Jamaal who understand tradition, thank you Jamaal

again really good, keep it up, this is what dancing is about.....
