Last's year's Bowling World Cup runner-up Martin Larsen, Sweden, a 3-time World Champion, started the 24th edition of the prestigious event in third place, leaped one spot in the second block and finished qualifying in third place among the players from 87 countries with 5282 pinfall total and an average of 220.08. Larsen maintained a slim 3-pin lead over former World Cup champion Michael Schmidt from Canada.
