TAKE THIS ROSE - Tenor with violin, 'cello and piano
(Gus Kahn - Hero de Rance)
Maurice J. Gunsky
Victor 20236-B, 1926.

Continuing with the collection of Maurice Gunsky records that belonged to my grandmother, I am presenting here the reverse side of Gunsky's famous "Consolation." Recorded in September 1926, "Take This Rose," is yet another sentimental ballad, the type of song for which Gunsky was known. This one is quite touching and tender, especially as sung by Gunsky.

Summer closes;
Still the roses tell of you,
While I wander
Where we wandered, just we two.
So, I send this rose to say
All I feel today:

Take this rose, this tiny rose,
and wear it for a day.
Take the love, that with it goes,
to keep or throw away.
Just a rosebud kissed by dew;
Kissed by tender teardrops, too.
Here it brings my heart to you,
so take this rose!

The stills of Gloria Swanson are from the "Serenade" sequence in her first talking picture. The charming and beautiful "Serenade" can been seen on MissVitaphone's channel.

  • Hi Anthony,

    It was a pleasure to listen to this wonderful vintage song.

    This style of singing is so classically 1920's.

    The way this singer makes his voice "vibrate" or "tremble" when he sings.

    I really don't hear that style of singing after the early 1930's. I suppose it must have went out of fashion.

    A lovely video....

    Very Tender and nostalgic.
