This is a little video I put together to give people a rough idea of the basic sounds you get from the Seymour Duncan Blackout pickups. I use them and love them.

I recorded this direct-in through a Line 6 Toneport UX2. I only used a Jazz Clean (I only removed the delay and lessened the reverb a little on the Modern Jazz preset) and a Distortion preset I made a long while ago. I didn't edit this and I was just messing around.

I use a lot of mids and little highs for my distortion and I like a lot of "pop" in my cleans. The pickups are very versatile in what sort of tones you can get from them. These are just MY likings in this video.

  • would it be better to pur these pickups in a ibanez rg4570z or an rg3520ze(this one already has emgs) its just im wondering if its really hard to put acive pickups in a guitar that already has passive ones

  • @Fear3001 Sorry for the super late response... I don't know to be honest. It is personal preference. I would look into the tonal quality of the woods and make your choice based on that.

  • hey, just wanted to know what tuning are you in and when you play the really fast riff at the end-ish or your little demo, what scale are you using?

  • @cabinboy500 To be honest, this was so long ago I don't remember. I am pretty sure I was in standard E tho.

  • was he playing actual songs? or just jammin?

  • @soccerbrandon123 Just jamming.

  • Nice playing! But I'm not going to buy those pickups. I'm going to buy some coca-cola!

  • i'd go with blackouts, more gain, better tone.

  • I've got blackouts in my Schecter Hellraiser C1-FR. Fucking sexy ass sound.

  • @Fear3001 probably 450, i looked at pictures on google it looked like it had maple instead of basswood body, which means a bigger sound and more resonance good for metal

  • I have that same exact shirt!

  • what does the neck pick up sound like when you roll the tone down a hair above all the way down on a clean steeing? would it sound good for jazz?

  • @Takaminelover25 Cause on EMGs they sound so good... (sarcasm)

  • @Fear3001

From everything I've heard, the RG's are quite easy to put active pickups in, and have plenty of room already routed out of them. I'm getting my RG350mye in a few days, and plan to put a blackout in the bridge position :]

  • That distortion makes it sound like your playing through a home stereo speaker(woofer). The cleans were decent though

  • @SHAGADAH - The wood quality isn't that great so I'd go with EMGs 81(B) 85(N). I only recommend these if you have a higher end guitar. You might not be happy with the highs but I think you'll like the EMGs for you app.
