Two Australian artillery batteries from the 8th/12th Regiment are currently combining with 'Mike' Battery from the United States Marine Corps' 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines (known as the '3/11'), for Exercise Gold Eagle in the Mt Bundey training area, south of Darwin. Conducted from 12 August to 16 September 2011, Exercise Gold Eagle is a combat arms reciprocal exchange program between the Australian Army and USMC that sees diggers and Marines working side-by-side to share knowledge and improve interoperability. The 93 Marines of Mike Battery flew to Darwin from their base in Twentynine Palms, California, to undertake several weeks of specialised training with Australian soldiers from the 8th/12th Regiment to operate the M198 howitzer and consolidate their gunnery skills. The current live-fire phase at Mt Bundey is the culmination of that training.
