  • Fatal mistake by Benko. Chess and girlfriends don't mix well together.

  • Hahaha been with his girlfriend the entire night before, so he was rather exhuasted. Best chess grandmaster excuse ever!!

I'll assume you mean Ne2 when you say Ng3.

"At 7:00, why was Ng3 played rather than the immediate exd6?"

Either one is a win for Fischer, I guess he didn't want to bother gaining material and wanted to focus on the mate so Ne2 was slowly bringing in another piece for the attack. "You say that the knight move was disastrous for Benko, but I just can't see how."

If the knight leaves d6, then Qf5 with forced mate.

  • At 7:00, why was Ng3 played rather than the immediate exd6? You say that the knight move was disastrous for Benko, but I just can't see how. You say that the black knight on d6 is threatened, but why wasn't it threatened before Ng3?

  • @TomDavid88 90% of grandmasters are married

  • That "girlfriend" excuse is total bullshit. Guys who waste their lives becoming this good at chess don't HAVE girlfriends!

  • Kingscrusher, I cannot thank you enough for sharing this and all of these games with us. This is a huge benefit to the chessworld.

Although, this game sort of irritates me. And I think it's typical of the games in Fischer's 60. It's a dazzling showpiece of tactics, yes, but really its capitalizing on the numerous errors that Benko made. There's no real deep positional or strategic beauty to be taken from this particular game.

  • Well, we have the best of both worlds here; everyone wins. Benko had a night which left him exhausted (lucky guy), and we get another brilliant game from Fischer.

  • This is the time when Fischer is in the Highest Level of his game... Nobody can beat him in the US Open.... Until now, nobody can do 11-0 Bcoz Fischer hated draw. He has a will to win... If you able to draw a game to him, considered yourself Lucky. Even during 1975 to defend his Title, one of his demands is that the draw should not be counted. And then he lose the Title. So sad. Nobody want to challenged Fischer in a you beat him or He beat you situation, DRAW is not a score for Fischer.

  • @NotThat3

It's found near the middle of page 1 in the "Why I lost: 1001 Excuses." book. :)

Most chess nerds don't have this particular worry.
