We made Still Water in 2005. It was made on 16mm (obviously not super 16 from the aspect ratio).
I had just bought an Eclair NPR 16mm camera because I wasn't happy with the look of video at the time. But because of the cost of film I was really nervous about shooting. So, my friend Ben Siow (who DOP'd) donated a roll of film and said - GO MAKE A FILM... or something to that effect.
We basically only had 1 roll (400'), which is equivalent to 10 mins of footage, to make this short on. So kudos to the actors - Yeo Yann Yann, Christian Lee and Keagan Kang (as the Silhouette). They mostly did everything in 1 take.
It was almost all handheld - and believe me - with a 10kg camera that's hard work! Camera operator was mostly me and there was no follow focus - so really guerilla! We also shot almost all of it at night with 2 redheads. Which explains the limited and sometimes unbalanced lighting.
Still ended up costing about $1000 to develop, telecine and do a quick colour grade.
Nevertheless - I love the look of film - the colour depth and gradient is just beautiful. We are getting the GH1s soon - so can't wait to stick our Angenieux lens onto one of the GH1s and see what we get out of it.
One day - I will come back to shooting film...
