  • thanks alot for the clear insight about Scapa Flow but does anyone know what the song is at 0:39 ? thank you

  • Hi, glad you liked it. the song is a version of the theme from the film, Last of the Mohicans, done by a pan pipes group in Maderia.

  • First my salut to those who died when the ship was sunk.

I have read Guenther Priens book "My way to Scapa Flow", printed in 1940. Althoug war literature was subject to propaganda, Prien never mentioned that Scapa flow was targeted because of the end of german ships after WW1. And although there was war, he NRVER made unrespectful comments about the Royal Navy.

He only cynically mentioned a news-comment from BBC right after the attack, that his boat was sunk.

    Royal Oak, rest in peace.

  • Thanks for your comments and the book title. i didn't know about that.

  • Thank you Royal Oak.

  • thanks for your comment. can you tell me a bit more about Harold Wernham please.

  • If you want to read a great novel featuring the sinking of the H.M.S. Royal Oak, go on Amazon.com and reference "The Cost of Courage" by Joseph Cordaro.

  • @gosuc Not to mention according to this clip 'the submarine was the most feared weapon at sea' and 'sounded the death knell for the battleships' - uh, i thought that was the aircraft carrier.

  • @Sidslotm

No, not shortly. His boat was sunk in April/May 1941. The exact date is unknown

  • Rubbish. It was aircraft that saw off the Battleship era!

  • Did't Prien and his men get sunk shortly after this.

    Hi mate,

    the original german book-title is:

"Mein Weg nach Scapa Flow" (Günther Prien)

You will be surprised that there is not much propaganda against

    the Royal Navy or Britain.

The only obvious mistake was, the he wrote he had sunk

the Repulse as well. But this mistake might happen, because

it was night when he attacked the vessels.

If you find the book, please let me know, I would like to buy a copy as well.

  • @gosuc Thanks for the name of book. i will try to get and read.. TKU

  • The book was originaly called "The man who sank the Royal Oak" and was also available over here, postwar, as "U-Boat Commander" ..( presuming you are refering to Priens autobiography.)

  • a good summary

  • No need
