LOW ENERGY - - A Chinese herbal prescription.
Low energy is one of the most common symptoms. When something goes wrong inside the body, you almost always experience a low energy period before recovery. Consequently, if low energy is treated as a root cause by itself, you seldom achieve solving the real problem.
Many things can cause low energy, ranging from the least severe (not enough sleep, catching a cold, or aging) to the urgent ones like hepatitis and other major organ ailments. How can you identify the root cause? The key lies in the duration, frequency, severity, and recovery of the low energy period. Low energy due to aging is a continuous mild decline only noticed once a while. Low energy due to lack of sleep disappears immediately after enough rest. Low energy due to catching a cold also disappears after the cold is gone. However, major problems related to the liver or other organs will see an abrupt and severe energy decline that lasts, and it only begins to improve when the root cause is being treated.
A discussion with the patient is necessary to help you understand the root cause of low energy. Since the root cause varies greatly, only a basic prescription is given here with the following assumptions:
* Not due to flu or cold (See video "Flu or Cold " by same author).
* Not due to major root cause such as hepatitis or other organ ailments.
* Not due to trivial cause like not enough sleep the night before.
The basic prescription for low energy should focus on strengthening blood circulation, liver, stomach, lungs, kidneys, and the Qi. If no positive result is seen after two weeks, you should appreciate that the root cause is more complicated than originally thought. A more accurate diagnosis is required.
1) Blood circulation
Sang Ji Sheng 桑 寄 生
Gui Zhi 桂 枝
Du Huo 獨 活
2) Liver
Bai Shao 白 芍
Gou Qi Zi 枸 杞 子
3) Stomach
Shan Yao 山 藥
Dang Shen 党 參
4) Lungs
Bai He 百 合
Zi Wan 紫 菀
5) Kidneys
Qian Shi 芡 實
Du Zhong 杜 仲
6) The Qi
Ren Shen 人 參
Huang Qi 黃 耆
A combination of 13 herbs is recommended.
One must be careful not to prescribe strong herbs for fast results. The consequence may be negative. When stronger herbs are used, they generate heat inside the body. Excess heat may cause many side effects.
Drink one cup (8 oz) of herb tea a day, preferably in the morning to allow time for dissipation of excess heat.
This is just one formula with countless variations depending on:
* How accurate is your diagnosis regarding the root cause.
* How weak is your body and where is the weakness.
* How sensitive is your body to the strengthening herbs.

I have read that the average Western person is more difficult to treat with Chinese Herbs than the typical Chinese person. The reason being that the pattern of imbalance in the western patient is usually more complex, because it has been left to develop for longer without anything being done to correct it. Do you think this is true?

Any man from the street can give you this kind of comment. Don't take that seriously.
The person who is hard to treat is the one who does not have faith in you and the medicine, who does not listen, who does not apply common sense, and who does not want to change his way of life.

Suppose a person with low energy drinks this herbal tea, but unfortunately the cause of their fatigue is not directly addressed by this particular formula. What sort of things could happen to the person? Could they become more tired, or feel odd in some way. Could they even make themselves more ill if they persevere with the formula even though it is not quite right?

People take the wrong herbs all the time because they follow rumors or the herbalist gives the wrong prescription. Rest assured that nobody dies. They are just wasting their time and money. The herbs are not that potent to cause any damaging effects, albeit some discomforts if wrongly used. If rightly used, you will be surprised at the good results.

Hi John. As you stated in the video there are many reasons why a person could have low energy and be feeling fatigued. Seeing as there are many root causes for fatigue, have you made this formula quite broad in scope so that it will assist more people? Or is it just an example of a formula that can be used for fatigue, and will only help some people, the people who's imbalances match the formulas actions?

All the formulas I gave are broad in scope because there are more than one person who view them. Besides, the formulas serve the purpose of an educational illustration. It's not the formula that is important and for everyone to copy. It's how I use the formula and the rationale behind it. This is how you learn Chinese medicine.
