Why eat paleo? Cavemen had short lifespans. 25-35 years on average. The Okinawans are the longest living people on the planet with the largest amount of centenarians in the world. They eat 70-80% carbohydrates (starch centered), 10-20% protein and 10% fat. Name a civilization of paleos with that record. No need for theory of another fad diet. You have living proof. Low diseases & cancers. Active physically and mentally til well into their later years.

how can you call Paleo a fad when many people have had this kind of approach for 1000s of years? and even if you don't agree with that, people like loren cordain have been doing this since the 1990's & robb wolf more than 10 years. that's not a fad. they've been able to sustain this for many years with great results, as have many others. a fad would be 3 months or so & that's not what this is. it's a lifestyle also about spending time in nature, reducing toxins, getting enough sleep & much more

the food group thing is a modern invention to help support the grain and processed food industry! some of the very foods that are subsidised by the US govt! the 'cutting out a whole food group' thing is nonsense. rather than focusing on groups and components of food like carbs, protein and fats ('nutritionism'), how about just making it about real food! the pyramid was not even created by anyone remotely qualified to recommend solid nutrition advice. 6-9 servings of grains per day? what a joke!

i happen to eat as much, if not more veg than meat, as do many people who follow paleo. i've also seen many health improvements. and about the okinawans - it's not the ratios of macronutrients you should be focusing on but more that they do not consume the processed crap that many in the west do and there are other lifestyle factors than just diet involved. the kitavans are the same. i agree that one can live healthily eating the way the okinawans do because there is no one size fits all diet.

there is no one paleo diet, but rather a paleo template/approach which then allows one to find out what works for them. if you look past the media's spin on paleo you will find that some people who follow a paleo approach do eat some starch like sweet potato, yams, etc, and some even have white rice, seriously. it's not necessarily high protein or low carb. it's more about food quality, nutrient density and removing inflammatory foods such as grains, legumes and bad quality dairy.

watch 'the oiling of america' on youtube for a start. this shows plenty of research. wake up. those ad campaigns that you see on TV are funded by the food industry who have sponsored dieticians working for them. the food industry, just like the pharma industry have no interest in our health. it's all about the bottom dollar - big corporations have all the power. and mainstream medicine is severely misinformed. as long as people are sick and keep coming back the business of disease continues.

getting nutrition advice from mainstream media and food industry funded health bodies like the heart foundation is really sad. low fat is a complete marketing ploy to sell highly processed crap that's full of sugar. saturated fat has been given a bad name to sell manmade crap like margarine and highly processed, cheap industrial seed oils like canola. & as jessica B mentioned, the cholesterol/heart disease 'theory' came from stigma back in the 1900's - there is so much info to debunk that now.
