Learn how to code trading strategies with FXCM's Strategy Trader

Strategy Trader is an exciting platform offering from FXCM. With Strategy Trader you can code strategies, perform advanced back-tests, run detailed optimization analyses and execute trades—all within the platform. In this video you'll learn how to upload a strategy from the editor window and how to apply a strategy to a chart.

Uploading strategies and indicators to the platform is very easy. In Strategy Trader, indicators and strategy files have a .fxd file extension, like you can see here with this Bollinger Band strategy. To keep your files organized and in a centralized location, we recommend saving all of your .fxd files within the same folder so you can easily find them if necessary. I've created a "Strategies & Indicators" folder within "My Documents" and this is where I place all of my .fxd files.

Now that your strategy file is in the right location, double click on the file. This will load the Strategy Trader Editor window. After the Editor opens, a pop-up window automatically appears and all you have to do is select "OK." You can see here that the strategy was imported successfully. Now, we can open Strategy Trader and the new Bollinger Bands strategy is available from the Strategy Advisors folder of the Navigation window.

To add a strategy to a chart, simply drag and drop the file, like this. To update the strategy parameters, select "format." After confirming that your settings are correct, click the "Close" button on this window. And near instantaneously you can see that the strategy has been applied and all of the buy and sell positions are visible. The back-testing speed on strategy trader is really fast.

To activate the strategy so it will begin functioning, click the "AUTO" button in the top left corner of the chart. Notice how the button turns from "red" to "green." Green means that the strategy advisor is active or turned on. To deactivate the strategy, just click the "AUTO" button again. The button turns back to "red" from "green."

As you can see, uploading and applying a strategy to your account is a simple and quick process. But Strategy Trader doesn't stop there. One of the key advantages to the Strategy Trader platform is its back-testing and optimization capabilities.
