Aikido students spend a lot of time working with the Jo. This video will give you a good understanding of what a typical jo weapons class is like.
This video was shot at Aikido of Manhattan (http://www.aikidoofmanhattan.com). Juba Nour Sensei, Aikido of Manhattan's chief instructor, demonstrates various jo techniques.

I think you can get really good by practicing in a small dojo like that. I would have probably broken the lights and knocked things off the walls there.

Thanks for the vid! Classic dojo, much like Toyoda Shihan's Tenshinkan in Chicago.

I wonder how differnt the technique would be to fighting with a quart staff, no counting the obvious differnece in length.

You're welcome. I have also read recently that jo use "evolved" from spears, while the bo corresponds to staff techniques - hence the frequent use of tsuki with the jo (if you imagine it with a pointed metal end ;^)

not really. i heard that a ladies "chests" can be an obstacle in many of her attacks.

I love the fluidity of the jo. The entire staff is usable as both an offensive and a defensive tool. I read somewhere that the jo was the product of a 10 year retreat by a kendo master who wanted to devise a method to defeat a master swordsman, and he came up with the jo to merge the yari and bokken into one weapon.
