Global temperatures have warmed significantly since 1880, the beginning of what scientists call the "modern record." At this time, the coverage provided by weather stations allowed for essentially global temperature data. As greenhouse gas emissions from energy production, industry and vehicles have increased, temperatures have climbed, most notably since the late 1970s. In this animation of temperature data from 1880-2011, reds indicate temperatures higher than the average during a baseline period of 1951-1980, while blues indicate lower temperatures than the baseline average. The global average surface temperature in 2011 was the ninth warmest since 1880, according to NASA scientists. The finding continues a trend in which nine of the 10 warmest years in the modern meteorological record have occurred since the year 2000.

NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, which monitors global surface temperatures on an ongoing basis, released an updated analysis that shows temperatures around the globe in 2011 compared to the average global temperature from the mid-20th century. The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience warmer temperatures than several decades ago. The average temperature around the globe in 2011 was 0.92 degrees F (0.51 C) warmer than the mid-20th century baseline.

if you look - the scale in the bottom right is from -2, to a positive 2. it's only a 4 number increase. graphs can be deceiving like this, for positive 2 is not 100% of earth's capacity to heat. it could be, say out of 10.

They use ice cores taken from the poles. By using radioactive carbon dating they can accurately determine age. Then based on the concentrations, and other chemical properties they are able to determine the temperature for that time period.

Even Al Gore doesn't believe in global warming. If he was so scared of ocean levels rising, then why did he buy a mansion on the beach of Malabo?

In the 1200's during the medieval warmth period, it was approximately 14 degrees hotter globally than today. And they haven't even invented charcoal. Let alone gasoline or electricity.

It's weird how they have that much information on Antarctica in the late 1800's when the first person didn't even reach the South Pole until 1911.

For those wondering why the weak 24th sunspot cycle hasn't yet produced noticeable cooling, I say give it some time -- we haven't even finished the cycle yet! If past history is any indication, the sunspot cycle minima will be prolonged, and the only thing that could save us from overly harsh cold winters in the northern hemisphere would be a reduction in cloud cover and precipitation (severe droughts come with such an environment).

Fact check: According to satellite data, Septembers in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2011 were all warmer than September in 2012 (287.93 K). Therefore, bernzeppi is regurgitating junk science from an unreliable source. AGW is bunk, and always has been. We closed out the 20th Century with "super sunspot cycles". This is what heated the oceans and helped fuel the warmer temperatures in the first decade of this millenium. Sum of sunspot numbers by cycle were 2X greater to end 20th.

Here's what you need to know: from 1978 to 2012, satellites have been monitoring surface and atmospheric temperatures on a global basis. This is the most scientifically objective data we have for mean global temperature. The linear trend through the entire data set indicates a whopping +0.01C/year increase -- that's +1.0C/century. However, due to cooling from 1998 to 2012, the R-squared value for the linear trend equation is only 0.31. In other words, temperature runs in cycles, not linearly.
