How to Update iPhone 3gS from 4.XX to iOS 5.0/5.0.1 while Preserving Baseband

This video is Only for iPhone 3gS Users who depend on Ultrasn0w to Unlock their iPhones. This whole operation is done with the help of three things. Redsn0w, iOS 5.0/5.0.1 and a Custom iOS 5.0/5.0.1 firmware (also called No baseband Update firmware). Latest version of iTunes 10.5 is also required.

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU HAVE UPDATED TO A CUSTOM IOS 5.0.1 WITH 06.15.00 BASEBAND , THEN AFTER UPDATING YOU NEED TO RUN REDSN0W 'AGAIN' AND CHOOSE 'INSTALL IPAD BASEBAND' OPTION EVEN IF YOU ALREADY HAVE 06.15.00 BASEBAND. YOU WILL GET THIS 'INSTALL IPAD BASEBAND OPTION WHEN YOU PRESS 'JAILBREAK' BUTTON AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN REDSNOW.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: Since this is a Tethered Jailbreak, in order to make it Untether simply install 'Corona 5.0.1 Untether' from Cydia after following this video. Doing so will make your jailbreak Untether.

What is Tethered Jailbreak: It Means if your battery dies on your iOS Devices or you reboot/restart , then you will get stuck on recovery screen. To get out of it, simply run Redsnow again and go to 'Extras'. Here choose 'Just boot' option and follow the instructions by putting your device in DFU mode. You will be back to normal.

Once iPhone 3gS is back to normal state now you will have Cydia on your iPhone. Folks that have 05.11.07, 05.12. 05.13.04, 06,15.00 basebands can freely install Ultrasn0w from Cydia to Unlock. And all those who still have 5.14 or 5.15 baseband will need to change their baseband to 06.15.00 by running Redsnow and choose 'iPad Baseband' option in 'Extras'.

@wafikhan448 Tick mark Just boot even if your sim card is in your iPhone. Also note that this is an iPhone 3gS and you have upgraded to Custom iOS 5.0.1 So you need to select 'install iPad baseband' option again in Redsnow even if you already have an iPad baseband on your iPhone .

@vahdawnn Run redsnow over your iPhone and make sure to select 'install iPad baseband' option. Then install 'Ultrasn0w' from Cydia. Done. Make sure to keep 3G off.

@gtnoy No worries. You are safe. Since you updated to official iOs 5.0.1 and now you must be at the activation screen. Run redsnow given in this video. Make sure when you get to check 'Cydia' - also check mark 'install iPad baseband' option. Make sure of this. Now redsnow will do its thing and reboot. But it will be stucked on Apple logo so boot tethered as explained in the video. Lastly install 'Corona 5.0.1 Untether' & Ultrasnow. All done. All is demoed live at the end of this video.

I have followed all instructions and when phone finishes retire in iTunes with custom ipsw

it says complete and your device will restart.. It does not and is stuck in dfu mode I've tried it twice with the same results. tried to use redsn0w to get out of dfu mode. to jailbreak.and nothing

says unsupported device

@peaceitquick. U must use tiny umbrella to downgrade to 4.1 if you have your shsh saved on saurik's server.

@peaceitquick I downgraded to 4.1 then started over. I was using old boot rom files and I have new boot rom. download idetector ih8sn0w.com to check your boot rom then follow emac's video here

I fixed the problem I downgraded to 4.1 then started over. I was using old boot rom files and I have new boot rom. all is good Jailbroken and unlocked
