Folkstones singing An Chuilfhionn - The Coolin. An Chúilfhionn {The Coolin} The Fair Haired One

An bhfaca tú an chúilfhionn 's í ag siúl ar na bóithre
Maidin gheal drúchta 's gan smúit ar a bróga?
Is iomaí ógánach súilghlass ag tnúth lena pósadh
Ach ní bhfaigheann siad mo rúnsa
.....ar an gcuntas is dóigh leo.

An bhfaca tú an speirbhean si na sui ris an taobh
Fáinní óir ar a méara sí ag réiteach a cinn?
'Sé dúirt an Phaorach a bhí ina mhaor ar an loing
Go mb'fhearr leis aige féin í ná Éire gan roinn.

An Chúilfhionn {The Coolin}. in English.

Have you seen my fair-haired girl walking the roads?
A bright dewy morning without a smudge on her shoes?
Many a young man is envious and longing to marry her
But they won't get my treasure
.....no matter what they think.

Have you seen my beautiful woman, a fine day and she is alone?
Her hair curling and twining, hanging down about her shoulders
Sweet young woman with the rosy blush on her brow
And every worthless man hopes she will be his lover.

Have you seen my maid beside the sea
Gold rings on her fingers she is making up her mind?
Mr. Power, who is the master of a ship, said
He would prefer to have her than the whole of Ireland.

  • PS. Wish I knew what the words meant in English...anyone ?

  • Kitty, i pasted the English tranlation into the side bar below the Irish lyrics.

  • A lovely song. *****

The words of the second verse as sung differ slightly from those printed :-

An bhfaca tú an speirbhean si na sui ris an taobh

Fáinní óir ar a méara sí ag réiteach a cinn?

'Sé dúirt an Phaorach a bhí ina mhaor ar an loing

Go mb'fhearr leis aige féin í ná Éire gan roinn

  • I should of known myself! Thanks for the correction.

  • Who is the singer and where can I find them? Donal

  • what a beautiful song.... i even cried

  • @bairen2002 I don't personally want a copyright but maintain that anyone 'adapting' someone elses work should have good reason for doing so and acknowledge the source. People have been burglarising houses from time immemorial - that doesn't make it a commendable activity.

  • Ah, thanks. sounds better in Irish ! Exquisite, anyway. this song is very special to me.

  • Thank you machree. This is something I cherish.

  • Early, early one morning, after a night with "my dear dark head".... almost 40 years ago...and "all is changed, changed utterly"...oh thank you for that revisited time. So beautiful.

  • Yes this is excellent. Does anyone know "an Capallin Ban"?

    Lovely Gaelic lyrics from Macroom
