  • As a young boy, I would admire these breathing beasts on the platform of the Nairobi Railway Station. These "59" class Beyer-Garratts are some of the most handsome steamers ever built.

    I rode a train, Nairobi-Mombasa and back, pulled by such Beyer-Garratts. Listening to the steam action and getting soot on your face was the real real!

    Watching this video makes me pine for the halcyon days of steam in East Africa. I don't know why EAR didn't save more of these beauties.
