The infamous runway 27 approach into Runway 27 at San Diego Lindbergh Field. This was the final destination for United flight #440. This was one of the more exhilarating and exciting approaches I've been on. Enjoy the flap noises!

  • Why do they call it runway 27? There's only one bloody runway. I guess "Runway 1" sounded too silly when they built it. :)

  • @gobo760 It depends on the direction that the runway is facing relative to true north.

  • "palm trees"...... Who was that... hahahaha

  • @gobo760 The runway 27 stands for 270 degrees, which is a heading in terms of direction. Every single runway in the world is named after its heading... So 270 is the heading facing West, 090 would be east.

  • Never mind. I didn't want to wait so I just looked it up... so the compass direction (in degrees) that you're facing at takeoff is rounded to the nearest tens digit and the last number is then cut off. So runway 27 actually faces 270 degrees west at takeoff... which makes sense since it's perpendicular to 0 degrees north. Fascinating, thanks. :)

  • @planelover3640 ohhhhhh... but... hmm, *raises hand*, if you click on my video "two jets nearly crash on runway in heavy fog", the runway is called "5" if you're taking off from one side and "23" if you're taking off from the other. The other runway is called "34" on one side and "16" on the other. If they're in reference to degrees, wouldn't they be 5 and 185 for one runway, and 34 and 214 for the other? PS. Isn't runway 27 almost 90 degrees adjacent to true north? Maybe I'm confused...

  • @planelover3640 Haha I know I figured....

  • @planelover3640 Well Good. Ill have some of my videos I take in the cockpit up soon if you want to subscribe. I sometime let my camera run too long and film a little bit too much of stuff in the cockpit. Great videos in all!!!

  • @RHCP9181 One of the better airlines I've flown on.
