@Litarider: Humans would have much pain while they healed if they had 3 other legs to stand on. Yes, doing nothing will not "fix" the ACL injury but the tissue surrounding the joint hardens to support the knee over 8 + weeks. The limp also keeps the dog from injuring or reinjuring legs. Different maybe if you have a very young dog, mine's 13 y.o. Just telling you that vet surgeons will always recommend surgery - and that''s B.S.
Just had my dogs knee done on Thursday, she is recovering (long process). We tried to avoid surgery even with laser treatments for 5 weeks, but she fell back onto the knee when she was just standing.try to avoid the surgery at all costs didnt work for her :( We live in NY it cost us 6,000! with one follow up visit. I have to have new xrays taken in 3-4 months which will cost I am sure up into the 100's.its a shame that when something happens they really take you to the bank . . . :(
@e1g3r The price depends on where you are located and the number of qualified surgeons in your area. My dog had his first ACL done in the Philadelphia, PA area. It cost us about $3000 (no follow up included). We had higher and lower estimates for the surgery. We are now in California in the East Bay Area and our dog is having his second TPLO today. We will pay around $5000 for the surgery (1 follow up visit included). Shop around and ask a lot of questions.
As the owner of a rescued dog who had 2 ruptured ACLs, I can tell you that doing nothing does NOT fix a dog's knees. It is true that the pain may be worse at some times than it is at other times, which may cause a decrease or disappearance in symptoms temporarily but it ALWAYS returns. Telling people not to fix their dog's knees if they can afford to fix them is not the best advice. Ask any human who had a torn ACL repaired about the extreme pain before surgery.
hi my pups surgery is costing around 2200 thats only using fishing line not the metal plate, the metal plate is 3500 and i have two pups who are going under the knife :-(
hi im really concerned i have 2 rottie pups who are six months of age they are brothers. The question is how can a six month old pup have a cruciate left ligament tear and just a week after his brother has the same thing? please help is it due to bad breeding or just unlucky?
Thank you very much!
