Two shots into water filled milk jugs.

CCI Maxi-Mag 40 gr. hollow point.
Ruger 77/22 magnum
15 yard range
Photos of all recovered fragments

A few days later I had the chronograph out anyway for other load develpment, so I timed a few CCI Maxi-Mag 22 WMR rounds.

All shots at 15 yards (same impact velocity as in this video).

5 shot mean: 1831 fps
#1: 1811 fps
#2: 1863 fps
#3: 1832 fps
#4: 1826 fps
#5: 1823 fps

  • would u say the 22 mag could be used for self defense or is it under powered?

  • @BDBakaJR

Could be used for self defense: Yes

    Underpowered for self defense: Yes

  • What gun are you using?

  • Ruger 77/22 Magnum bolt action rifle.

  • have you used that round hunting? im trying to choose between the hornady 30 gr v-max and the cci 40 gr HP for rabbit and fox hunting maybe the odd kangaroo. its for my savage 22 magnum, have you had much sucess with it? or did you just do the water tests? whats the maxium distance youve shoot it at with effectiveness?

  • I would not recomend this round for rabbits becasue it will dammage more meat than necessary. This round would probably be very good for fox; lots of internal damage for humane kills but very small entrance and exit wounds to prevent pelt damage. No experience with kangaroos, sorry can't help you there. I have never tried the 30 grn V-max, please let me know how it works out for you.

  • A supersonic round hitting water will always disapate all its energy with in the first 3-6 feet, or 1-2 meters. Even a .50caliber

  • @Genarator88

Plenty medicine for a Fox the .22 mag is.

  • @maxwell308

We can't use the .22 mag on coon here for night hunts. Only .22 LR

Not as good a kill as a mag.

but less pelt damage. did the 40 gr CCI really reach 1870 FPS?(and change)

  • @drewnickel Custom .22WMR loads. Interesting

  • @maxwell308 also think of it this way, a 9mm and .22 magnum have the same muzzle energy, just different diameter/weight bullets. a 9mm by all means will do more damage, but what a .22 magnum lacks in strangth is it's accuracy. a 9mm jumps up alot when fired and makes consistant chest shots difficult for further shots, .22 magnums have no recoil meaning you can do follow up shots much faster, and with more than double the ammo, it more than makes up for that lack of power

  • @ntrudr800 there are custom ammo manufacturers that will make ammo to your specifications, and will make sure that it still stays within the pressure limits. you just remove the 40gr bullet and replace it with a .22 centerfire 60gr bullet, without changing powder charge. it lowers velocity significantly from the 2250fps in a rifle to 1600 in a rifle, but it stays in the barrel longer and makes more use of the powder meaning it still goes about the same speed in a pistol

  • @drewnickel Clarify: What cartridge of 60gr produces 1600 FPS?

  • @ntrudr800 also, keep in mind that you can make up for lower pistol speeds in .22 magnum with the new 60gr .22 magnum rounds, 60 gr at 1600fps will still do similar damage to a 125gr bullet at 1000fps. 9mm's take the cake in penetration, but they are often oversized and carry only 12 rounds. the .22 magnum can carry 30 rds while still being concealable, and have no recoil to affect accuracy. meaning if the first round doesn't stop the guy, you have 29 more to take him down with in just seconds

  • @ntrudr800 keep in mind that high velocty rounds make wounds many times the size of the bullet that was fired, a .22 magnum pistol fires at 1950fps and will make a hole about 1.073", where as the 9mm will make a hole 0.9". yes the 9mm will have more energy due to the heavier bullet, but the .22 magnum still has 200fpe and because of the large wound cavity, it'll prove to be more lethal. the 9mm will penetrate more but for normally clothed people the .22 magnum is more conveniant

  • @drewnickel Compare the 40gr .22wmr HP to the 125gr 9mm HP for self defense. Then compare the FMJ version of these cartridges. Stop comparing FMJ to HP--FMJ pierces while HP expands. Some HP expands AND fragments. 3 very different bullets and outcomes!

  • @maxwell308 absolutely not in a concealed carry situation. the .22 magnum will make a hole way bigger than a standard 9mm ball with less noise, and less recoil. the hole is the big thing, bigger hole means you bleed faster. even though a 9mm has better stopping power, it's wasted because it pierces all the way through. a .22 magnum like the kel tec pmr 30 will shoot a hollowpoint at 1750fps with a 30 + 1 rd capacity and the ammo is cheaper so you can get a better feel for the gun
