Thanks to Karen Kavett for the graphics: http://youtube.com/xperpetualmotion

In which John explains the education continuum and why math and literature both help us understand the universe in surprisingly similar ways.

Weeeell, if you assign each letter an integer value based on its position in the alphabet such that M = 0, since it's right around the middle, everything before it being negative (A = -12, B = -11, etc.) and everything after being positive (N = 1, O = 2, etc.), then sum up the letters, S+T+R+A+W+B+E+R+R+I+E+S

    = 6+7+5-12+10-11-8+5+5-4-8+6

    = 2

    P.S. By this same system, √EVIL = 2i and |ME| - U = 0.

Here's a fairly good rule for symbols in Edgar Allan Poe works (as postulated by a fellow nerdfighter and myself):

    If it's a noun, it's a symbol.

#795: I am a literature person. Math and I do not get along.

I am neither a math person nor a literature person. I am a science person.

2:37 - I turn the lamp in my room off. A moment later, John's lamp disappears.

I stare at the annotation amused and amazed, and at 2:41, just a second before the annotation disappeared, (not knowing the annotation is about to disappear) I turn the lamp back on. That was awesome.

My music literature professor in college told us that everyone's either a Classical or Romantic person. (Classical & Romantic being major periods in music. Think Mozart for Classical & Chopin for Romantic.) He pointed to me & said "Romantic." Bingo!

I was reminded of that when you said people say you're either a literature (Romantic) or math (Classical) person. However, "Romantic vs. Classical" is more a thought on personality than brain power. I guess my statement adds nothing. NOOOOOOO

Interesting question: Is the disappearing lamp a symbol? A metaphor? A solvable question with one solution?

    WHAT DOES IT MEAN??

questions that keep me awake at night. . .

The study of literature is just awful. I wouldn't say this if we weren't graded on a system that rates writing subjectively, then converts that into a score that changes your GPA.

And, if it's a symbol, it represents death. (:

This is one of my favorite vlogbrothers videos. As a physics major who dreams of writing fiction novels, this video speaks personally to me. John, you're absolutely right.
