Also known as "The Missouri Dawg Song" or "They Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dog Around", this song has been attributed to Byron G. Harlan, who recorded it with the American Quartet in 1912. Presidential candidate, Beauchamp Clark, actually used it as his campaign song that same year. An article in the NY Times pointed out that it was originally a 15th century German children's song.

It has been recorded many times, but my first hearing of it was a recording by Buffy Sainte-Marie, so my version is obviously influenced by hers.

  • I remember this song from "Kellys heros" the movie with Clint eastwood n c.o.

  • I must have missed that one. I think the only version I've heard is the one by Buffy Sainte-Marie.

  • Like your video. I just posted a video response of my version. It's a very comical song.

  • Thanks for the response. How did you manage to do that without needing my approval? I can't even do a video response to myself without getting my own approval!

  • Good find..I didn't think anybody else had ever heard this song. My folks had it on 78. I grew up with it. Anyone ever heared about "big rock in the road"? OMG!

  • I first heard it sung by Buffy Sainte-Marie. Glad you found my rendition.

  • Thanks. Hope the dog enjoyed the song.

  • I have no idea. Some how I just did it. I tried to aprove someone once when they posted me a video response of my cats and I couldn't get it to work for them no matter what I did.

  • Yea I was looking for that version when I stumbled on Raymond's... and I'm so glad I did. Thanks so much for sharing with us Raymond.
