Mignarda lutesong duo Ron Andrico & Donna Stewart. Recorded live September 23, 2007 at the First Unitarian Society, Ithaca, New York.
The so-called "New Scots Tune", aka "Dear Peggy (or Pekie) I must love thee", is a tune published in the 5th edition of John Playford's 'Apollo's Banquet', 1687. Purcell added a bass line and harmonization, which was published in Musick's Handmaid, 1689. Ron's setting closely follows Purcell's keyboard harmonization. The text is:
As I cam by yon bonnie burn so clear
I haird a lad complaining
A doleful voice did reach mine ear
Which had me know his meaning
His tongue which did his heart betray
In loosing he did oftimes say,
"Tis thy disdain that murders me,
Dear Peggy I most love thee."
Wow...have you done much of this Scottish music? CD? MP3s?

Thanks for this and your other comments. We have both been immersed in traditional Scots & Irish music in previous incarnations. Ron plays and teaches traditional fiddle, and Donna (an unapologetic Stewart) has sung Scots and Irish ballads in the style of Jean Redpath for many years. We like to think our backgrounds have a positive influence on the style in which we perform lute songs.
