about an inch will last about a half hour, alcohol burns quite well and cleanly

@HammockerSam, Just lighting the fuel inside the stove will eventually prime the stove, it just takes longer. However the priming pan serves 2 purposes, it helps prime the stove faster and while burning it reflects some heat back to the stove to keep it burning more efficiently. We have tried it both ways and the priming pan helps the stove perform so much better.
