A look at the Union Depot, which opened in 1893 at Fort Street and Second. It was the lesser-known, lesser-traveled of Detroit's two main train stations. The building stood until January 1974, when a crane with a jack-o-lantern-like bucket nibbled away on its red sandstone walls. A fitting, drawn-out demise for a depot that served Detroit for nearly 80 years.

Such a shame. Indianapolis kept theirs. Sad that knocking down great buildings before their time was up is nothing new in Detroit.

Watch the cheesy old movie 'Detroit 9000' (available on DVD) for scenes filmed outside & inside this cool old building as well as many other Detroit landmarks in the early 1970s. The site of this building is now Wayne County Community College's downtown Detroit campus.
