Hans Pfitzner (1869-1949)
"Von deutscher Seele" (Of the German Soul)
A Romantic Cantata after texts by Joseph von Eichendorff
for four solo voices, mixed chorus, orchestra and organ

Agnes Giebel (soprano)
Hertha Töpper (alto)
Fritz Wunderlich (tenor)
Otto Wiener (bass)
Orchestra and Chorus of the Bavarian Radio
Joseph Keilberth cond.

Part One: "Mensch und Natur" (Man and Nature)
Pt 4 of 6

Orchestral Interlude:
"Nacht" (Night)

Spruch 4 aus "Wandersprüche"

Die Lerche grüßt den ersten Strahl,
Daß er die Brust ihr zünde,
Wenn träge Nacht noch überall
Durchschleicht die tiefen Gründe.

Und du willst, Menschenkind, der Zeit
Verzagend unterliegen?
Was ist dein kleines Erdenleid?
Du mußt es überfliegen!

Aphorism 4 from "Travel dicta"

The lark greets the first ray
For stirring its breast
When everywhere below, night
Still holds its sluggish sway.

Child of man, and you wish,
Despairlngly, to be defeated by time?
What is your little earthly sorrow?
You must rise above it!

  • Hi again! Whew! 'Nacht' is done here in awesome fashion, and you did a nice thing by going on to "the next morning" ("lark"). "seancoxen" DOES have a good suggestion here... I'll soon go to your site and follow your directions. I've had the advantage of having once studied a bit of this Work, so I'm a but familiar with the flow... ...even then, it's been ages for me, AND I never did study the whole Work, as Prestel cancelled things, and I got busy with other projects.

Thanks, again! I sent you a link for the playlist of this work, 13 videos in all. Quite a challenge to do. Hope you enjoy!

  • Dear FiDiTanzer, I'm delighted you posted this recording, but could you arrange them or mark them in some way so that novices will know how to proceed from the beginning to the end? It would be an enormous help, thanks.

  • @seancoxen

If you go to my channel I have created a playlist of the entire work. Or if you begin with the first video you will find a video response attached which will take you to the next in line and so on. Really the playlist would be the easiest. If you cannot locate the playlist on my channel I will be happy to send you a link. Thank you for your interest.
