Actually, it wasn't a female voice; it was his own, at twice-normal speed. Slowing down a 45 to 33 rpm doesn't lower the pitch enough; you'd have to play it at 22 1/2 rpm (no such speed) to do it. As a kid I had a phono with 16 rpm speed on it; playing a 33 rpm Chipmunks LP at 16 revealed the whole secret! If you have an old reel-tape deck, try recording the 45 at 7 1/2 ips, then play back at 3 3/4 and you've got it.

Solid studio production made this a hit. He had an earlier single called "The Bird On My Head" that didn't click, cuz it didn't use the speeded up voice very much. By exploiting that studio trick more (recording a female about 1/3rd of a speed slower, then playing it back at normal speed to speed it up), it was a massive summer 1958 hit. (If you play the original 45 at 33 RPM, you can hear the female voice as it sounded in the studio during recording.) Then came the 1st x-mas Chipmunk song.

Sadistic bugger, isn't he? LOL Actually, I always felt that his depiction in the 1960s Chipmunks cartoon series made him look taller and thinner! As for the 1980s version, the new David Seville was actually his son, Ross Bagdasarian, Jr.
