A jockey who suffered the most-crushing loss of his career in the same race a year ago, a trainer with whom he had won many major races in years past, and a horse who had been long forgotten since his Belmont Stakes victory 17 months earlier combined to win the richest race of the year on Saturday at Churchill Downs, when Drosselmeyer stormed down the center of the track to take the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
Jockey Mike Smith, who said he was "devastated" when Zenyatta suffered the lone loss of her career here in last year's Classic, and trainer Bill Mott, who won the Ladies' Classic on Friday with Royal Delta, worked their old-time magic with Drosselmeyer, who had won just one time in six starts since his 2010 Belmont Stakes victory. That was the only previous time that Smith had ridden Drosselmeyer in a race.
Asked how long it took to get over Zenyatta's defeat, Smith said, "Until now."

@33madisonave Mo just didn't want 10 furlongs. Don't believe what you hear from the connections... they get paid to make excuses. He would have won the mile with ease. This race was pure greedy from Repole. Pletcher would have run him in the dirt mile.

@TicinoParadise Wow, I was going to like your post until you went ahead and ripped the Zapper, who is the best horse of the past 20 years. Oh, and even though I cashed a huge ticket on St Nick Abbey is the Turf, that was a weak field too.

What a JOKE of a race. Classic?....The TURF had better quality field. The Classic won by a shit plodder, over a bunch of Milers, 9 furlong horses, and a burnt out So you Think. Bravo. I'll go back and watch the Classics from the 90's those were REAL fields(Aside from Ghostzapper).

@33madisonave Sad that Uncle Mo was owned by someone who cared more about his own ego than he did about what was good for the horse. Health concerns aside, he had no business running 10 furlongs, clearly, particularly since he had not trained for it, after having been laid up sick for so long.

@AcesIced alot of horses were forwardly placed in this race....drosselmeyer won the belmont the previous year....so he was good...buti agree the field wasn't that great...

I am soo sad. :( I was watching this for Uncle Mo... I was soo mad when he just dropped off at the end... I thought there was something behind the seen where we can't see (people pay him to lose) Then I find out his enzymes were high . . . and even sadder when I heard Uncle Mo retired from being sick :'(. I guess Drosselmeyer is a good win because he is from Winstar farms (I was there once) For Uncle Mo :'(

Mike Smith's message to Chantal Sutherland...
"HOW DO YA' LIKE ME NOW?!"
That'll teach the bitch!

SYT was on the go for too long in 2011 with only a short break between the Coral eclipse and Irish Champion stakes. I hope AOB has a clearer picture on what races SYT should target for 2012 then in 2011 where he seems to only decide after each race was done.

Uncle Mo reminds me a bit of Helmet here in Aus, both terrific milers and came into ther 1st attempt at a big G1 10f race as favourite Uncle Mo (BC classic) and Helmet (Cox Plate) but couldnt stay the trip. Great race! thank you for the video and well done to Drosselmeyer.
