Saxophone repairman Matt Stohrer of Stohrermusic.com gives an overview of the vintage metal tenor mouthpieces that Bob Dukoff made in Hollywood, California in the 1940s. These are NOT the Dukoffs you see today- they are quite different in every way, from construction to playing.

  • Matt, in what way are those old dukoffs different from the more modern ones? Sax people probably don't need to be told, but for those outside they might like to see the comparison.

  • @mwoolner I wish I could post links here. At its most basic, the new Dukoffs are not handmade, they are made from a different material (a pewter-like soft alloy), and their internal characteristics are completey different, favoring a bright, loud, crispy sound.

  • Great info Matt. These are examples of the era when Dukoff really gave a crap about what they manufactured.

  • @saxismyaxe agreed!!

  • @MmmBrowneisMmm sounds like an opinion rather than a fact. nobody can tell you what works for you but you- try some mouthpieces out and see. i think you will find that material matters less than craftsmanship and internal shape.
