Save the Geronimo Creek from the City of Seguin!

One of the most pristine streams in Texas, the spring-fed Geronimo Creek, continues to be violated by the City of Seguin, Texas. The latest violation resulted in multiple cubic yards of soil being washed into the creek following a 2-inch rain. This occurred after the city installed a new sewer pipe and manhole in an artificial embankment directly adjacent to the creek. On October 18, 2011, the City Council was shown photos of severe erosion around this manhole that occurred after a 1.2-inch rain. They refused a request to place the status of the project on their agenda. Had they agreed to receive details about the problem, they could have directed city staff to properly repair the manhole, and the much more severe erosion shown in this video that occurred during a 2-inch rain on November 15, 2011, would not have occurred. What they don't realize is that a major flood on the creek may wash away the entire artificial embankment and expose the complete manhole structure to rapidly moving logs that may push it over. If this manhole fails during a flood, water will enter the sewer pipe and saturate the capacity of the downstream waste water treatment plant. The city is not entirely responsible for this fiasco, for an engineering firm was hired to plan the sewer system. Why they specified a manhole at this location is inexplicable and only the latest in a long series of problems and regulatory violations that have plagued this project for years.
