Yeah, I got a free Avicularia versicolor spiderling, and it's freaking ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!

I now have far too many tarantulas, lol. Currently I have:
Avicularia versicolor -pink toe
Avicularia avicularia -pink toe
Nhandu chromatus (x2) - brazilian red and white
Green bottle blue
French Guyana blue fang
G. pulchripes -chaco golden knee
Cyriocosmus elegans - trinidad dwarf tiger rump
Cyriocosmus sellatus
Cyriocosmus perezmilesi
B. boehmei - mexican fireleg

I also have a false black widow and a Phidippus audax (jumping spider), and I'm expecting in the mail this WEEK:
a GRAB BAG of spiderlings from kenthebugguy.com
and a Cyriocosmus ritae female!

I should note that ALL my tarantulas are technically still spiderlings, with the exception of my juvenile 2.5"+ Blue fang, who's still small but they only get something like 4". The C. ritae coming in the mail will be a wild caught adult, so we'll see how that goes.

  • Hey, I can't seem to get a straight answer on the subject of Avics as a T for a noob.

    I'm a week into the hobby and I have a C. Cyaneoubescens, and a B. Albopilosum.

I know A. Versis need superb ventilation. Anything else you can recommend?

I'm afraid of Sudden Avic Death Syndrome, as I've heard Avics are very particular about their requirements, and can offten "up and die" if not cared for with the UTMOST precision.

  • You know, quite honestly I've heard of this SADS going around, but my little avic slings have been alive and thriving for 5 (for the versi) and 6 (for the avic avic) months now with no issues whatsoever. They're kept in those craft cubes, misted every couple days, and there's small holes drilled into the container around the edge of it for ventilation. I feed them prekilled (all of my guys are on prekilled, actually, I prefer it that way) and they readily accept it. Temp is around 75.

  • Would you say tarantulas are easy to take care of or time consuming. I already have a few animals, and I'm thinking about getting a tarantula. Also, are they aggressive? What type would you reccomend for a non aggressive species?

  • Tarantulas are probably the easiest pet out there besides a rock. I am now up to 15 tarantulas, ranging from baby slings to an adult Cyriocosmus ritae (which is a dwarf species, only 1 1/2 inches leg length). You feed them once a week, I give mine frozen/thawed crickets or mealworms, they dont' even need to eat live and sometimes crickets have been known to kill them. They can be kept in small tupperware or anything. BEST species that's non-aggresive is Chaco golden knee. Mine's a sweetie.

  • I recommend the arachnoboards. there's a few non-aggressive species out there that are great for beginners. Chaco just happens to be my first (and I bought a spiderling at 1/2". It's been 6 months now and it's already 2" long. They get to be 8" total). Baby T's are fun to raise, though. I definitely recommend a spiderling so you can grow into it and get used to it.

  • what a cute spider!

    now i want one....

are they hard to take care of?

  • A. versicolors are pretty popular so there are tons of caresheets out there. They're arboreals and like moderate to high humidity. most people tend to toss the T caresheets out the window and follow their own rules, with a general high humidity for tropicals and low for deserts. Some even keep them at room temperature,I keep a heat pad on the side of the bookshelf the slings are set up on, which reads around 80 degrees F. versicolor are somewhat hardy they do get bigger than this of course!

  • @pouchedrattie i just got roughly the same sized spider yesterday. i was wondering on when should you move it into a bigger container? rather the small tupperware i can keep a high humidity in a 2.5 gallon tank and i want it to have lots of space, i feel like the containers not big enough, also i was told you shouldnt handle them at this size?
