It pains me to say this, Joe may be her godfather but Lily sucks all meaning and passion from the song. An impassioned moment of political and social genuis becomes as insipid as elevator muzak.

If you want "STRAIGHT TO HELL" by The Clash then listen to "STRAIGHT TO HELL" by The Clash. Nothing could ever affect the strength, integrity and timelessness of that song. Not even this weak-watered-down-Chavved-up-E
astenders version. Dunno what Allen was attempting to accomplish with this, but taking on this song with all it's history and substance is overambition at its best. There is only one way to respect this song - and that is to simply NOT cover it. -
Hey no harm no foul.Does it kick me in the ass like it does when Joe sings it with band?Come on now.Nobodys ever going to redo a Clash song and make it better. Not gonna happen.

Lily Allen: turning rebellion into money

Clearly someone with the heart to sing with a ring of truth what may for some be fore sooth.

Zbyt chciała za podobnie i wyszło zbyt gorzej od Joe Strummera. Bardzo słaby kower.

good...but not a scratch on the original.....toppers drums ,were probably were the one of the best ever
-
what to say...her music is full of compression and freakin Pitch Correction (same as Joe-F&%$# Summer Pitch-Correction-Man)...and her father, or whatever he is, is nothing else but really good average manager...F&%$

Xmas is coming.
There ain't no need for ya!
GO straight to hell you faggot!
-
No, I don't really like it. The original song is way better.

Great version Girl!

This is interesting. Certainly worth a listen as it makes you appreciate the Josh Rouse cover so much more.

I think Lilly does a great job interpreting this Clash fav. She catches the feel of the original pretty well. Her voice at 2:49 just kill!. Thanks for posting this!

lily allen may not be everybody's taste, but at least she hasn't come out of the stupid x-factor karaoke competition. nowadays that means quite a lot...
-
It's too hard to separate the person Joe Strummer to the ideal of Straight to Hell lyrics, but it's fun...
-
I think what makes this not sound half bad is that compared to other covers of the clash ive heard is that she makes this her own she changes it and does her own impersonation... She shouldn be critised for this the clash by my opinion would welcome this... Shes taken the song and its become something this is not a question on who does a better version, she shouldn be criticised for this I'd like to see someone else trying taking such an amzing song lik this and make their own differnt version
-
im an old fart clash fan and think this is great. so piss off all you "orig was better" bores. she did her own version. karaoke its not.
-
@perthgloryboy great song,,,nobody should ever cover this, but nice try.orginal far better
-
@keji1 It's called an opinion mate.

Joe wasn't actually her God Father, they were just very close as she was growing up. And what is wrong with you people? This cover is brilliant, but the original is of course better :)
-
aw,shut the fuck up lily.
I'm 44, going on 17. I've loved the Clash since '77. I saw them in '81. I know nothing about Lily Allen - but I listened to this with open ears and I thought as an original interpretation it's pretty good. And I don't know if that's him or not, but it sounds like Mick Jones in the background, his voice is so distinctive, and adds clout to the song.
