http://www.cactuscanyon.com/bad-dogteeth.htm Sure, all dog owners would love to have their dog's teeth pearly white instead of seeing bad dog teeth. However, there are more important reasons for having your dog's teeth appear very clean and white. Tartar build-up on teeth in your dog can be very bad and healthy. The reason for this is that tartar acts as a breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria then often cause infections in the gums, which leads to bleeding gums. When there is bleeding in the gums, the bacteria then have direct access to the bloodstream. They migrate via the bloodstream to other parts of the body, including important organs. Once they infest these organs, their byproducts, which they release, can be very dangerous. Oftentimes, this can lead to disease, and sometimes even death, in dogs with bad teeth being the cause. Veterinarians are very concerned about bad dog teeth. They often almost insist that a process called scaling is performed in order to remove the tartar from your dog's teeth. Although the scaling process is very effective, it is also very dangerous. The reason for this is that general anesthetic is required. Most people do not realize that general anesthetic performed on dogs is far more dangerous than with humans. In fact, almost 10 times as many dogs per 1,000 who undergo anesthesia will die compared to humans. The reason for this is that dogs' bodies are smaller and therefore more susceptible to adverse reactions with the anesthetic. Also, there are less safety precautions and training required when giving dogs this kind of treatment. Before allowing your dog to undergo scaling for bad teeth always consult with your vet on the other options, which might be available. Cleaning your dog's teeth does not have to involve this procedure. There are alternative methods which are very safe. There are products on the market, such as toothpaste, gels, and sprays, which are all natural and have no adverse side-effects. Additionally, these products are far more inexpensive than scaling, which can often cost $400 and more when done in the vet's office. Always began cleaning your puppy's teeth when they are young. This way, as your dog ages, they are used to having their teeth cleaned, and you can maintain proper dental health through the course of their life.
