The top 1% take in even more than 25%

"In the United States, wealth is highly concentrated in a relatively few hands. As of 2007, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 34.6% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 50.5%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 85%, leaving only 15% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers).

@Rundstedt1 Your figures are accurate, but let's be careful not to confuse wealth and income. One is balance sheet and the other is income statement. One is assets & net worth and the other is earnings. The top 1% owns nearly 35% of the nation's wealth, but they earn nearly 25% of the nation's annual income. They are important distinctions, especially when we're talking about taxation. Nobody is suggesting we plunder the wealth of the top 1%. We're suggesting they part with more income.

If people were really paying attention they would see the ball is already rolling in that direction. Case in point, the length of time the recession is lasting, lack of jobs, cost of living continuing to rise, etc. MANY Americans have been without work for so long that when a job opportunity does come their way they'll take whatever pay is offered. 21st century slavery!
