Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. has had plenty of success working with the eagle eye of bloodstock agent Nick Sallusto in the past, and the two teamed up again with another big find in Homeboykris.
Sallusto helped Dutrow acquire champions Benny the Bull and Stardom Bound, as well as top turf miler Kip Deville and Sunshine Millions and Swale Stakes winner This Ones for Phil. Sallusto helped Dutrow pick out Homeboykris after a maiden win at Calder in July, and owner Louis Lazzinnaro purchased the horse privately.
After three months in Dutrows capable hands, Homeboykris emerged in his first start for his new handlers Saturday and blew away a top field of 2-year-olds to upset the Grade 1, $400,000 Champagne, beating Discreetly Mine by 1½ lengths at Belmont Park.
The winner, a gelded son of Roman Ruler, ran the one-turn mile dirt race for 2-year-olds in 1:35.12 under Edgar Prado. As the 5.60-to-1 third choice in a field of six, Homeboykris paid $13.20 for a $2 win ticket.
Wow! With Joel Rosario in the irons -- it fits Joel's handling style, and he's pretty sharp in unleashing the horse's one best run should that be the route the trainer uses to apply. One for the exotics -- at 30:1. (can't go wrong)
