i'm trying to illustrate how songs can thoroughly be performed/covered with a few relatively novice musicians, each with an inexpensive (less than $150) 21st century keyboard.

this is my first attempt at a multitrack keyboard performance. i had some timing/pitch issues with my handheld flip video camera and movie edit pro software - i was more interested in getting something together at all than getting it all perfect on the first try.

anyway, i used nothing but a yamaha ypt300 run through a regular amp/speakers (like a home stereo) and used the built-in mic from the flip video recorder. as a result, there's lots of audible key click noise as well as ambient noise (computer fan, breathing, etc.).

i had to record with the flip video the original song playing on the stereo just to get the timing syncable so the quality of the original is reduced. also, the ypt300 does not have glide (needed on the synth lead) but that's about all it doesn't have. most sounds are PLENTY close enough to what you need.

the track positions and ypt300 (presets) are as follows:

top middle: original song & bass (41)

top left: synth Lead (95 + dual 90 up an octave)

top right: 12 string guitar (31 + dual 31 up an octave)

bottom middle: string section (261)

bottom left: hammond organ (16)

bottom right: e-piano (11) from 1:29-1:40 then pipe organ (22) after 1:40.

note that one only need be proficient at playing 3-note chords to play most of these parts. only the synth lead takes some moderately advanced dexterity (and if played with two hands with the left hand on the A it gets even simpler). so this entire song could be played only using moderate skills. no prodigies required.

thanks for watching. i hope to work out some of the recording/performance kinks in my next video, namely with better screen placement and line-in audio.

i may still settle for a MOSTLY right performance and leave the wrong notes in there (like i did this time) just to get something out the door.

hoping to do "concerto for a rainy day" (ELO) and "broken wings" (mister mister) soon.

have a NICE day.

  • Wow this is awesome!!! Any chance you could send me the sheet music?

  • actually your best bet is to google "styx fooling yourself midi", download the midi file, import it into a midi editor that prints notation (like cakewalk music creator - $39) and change the stuff that's wrong. what i played i played by ear and the last time someone asked me to record it it took me 4 hours to get it perfect and printable (i'm OCD about musical perfection) so i'd rather you do the download-the-midi-file-from-the-internet-and-print-it-yourself route. thanks for asking, though.

  • the original song is about 20 cents above standard pitch, and my keyboard was tuned to 20 cents above standard. don't know why it came out sounding so detuned.

also, i said $150 was inexpensive. i remember when i thought $150 was VERY expensive. no offense. it's just that when i started buying synthesizers they were thousands of dollars apiece. now in the 21st century, a $150 keyboard can pretty much exactly duplicate the sounds of the ones i bought for thousands of dollars.

  • sorry for the slightly-out-of-tune production. originally i recorded the keyboard parts with the original playing in my earbuds. when then i imported the original .wav file and videos into movie edit pro the timing was off. they'd be in sync to start with but get out of sync later. so i hadta record the keyboard and the original song with the flip video recorder so subsequent videos would be in sync with the original.

  • @sfindex hey. nice vid. this is my favorite song ever! I've got this exact same keyboard and I would like to know which functions you used for each part. Thanks.

  • You are "Fooling Yourself" if you think "your contribution" sounds as good as the original!

It doesn't come close. But I can see where you may be fool some into thinking so since you are playing along with a Styx record that simply drowns you out. While a novice like yourself may be able to play most of the right notes and chords, your technique is lacking & Styx's Oberheim 4 Voice synth blows your cheap 21st century keyboard away. I dare you to try this again without the Styx record.!

  • What was the sound patch used for the Synth lead lines???

  • This is why I need more than one keyboard if I'm going to play these songs live.

  • WOW! I dont know who you are but you are the most awesome keyboardist i can imagine! man you are da shit!! I bought one at a pawnshop for 40 bucs! i had no idea it would do all that!!I play alot of r&b but i listen to the stuff you play and man oh man are you good!! I am a fan now!

  • ebay.

  • where did u get 4 hands ?

  • Another great rendition! Hey is your Yamaha midi? There are a bunch of free VSTs on the Internet. I would love to see you do the same with the freeware VSTs out there (maybe you have done it already).

  • Very nice! Very nice indeed!

  • Ah, I see. I've tried to write it out, but I needed somewhere to start, so I'll do that. Thanks, and again, awesome playing!
