Today, April 11th 2011, off Newfoundland, Canada started its annual butchering of thousands of baby seals using barbed clubs and guns.
This Sky TV report went out during the 2009 season and brought worldwide condemnation whilst shining a light upon the shame of Canada's annual seal 'hunt'.
In 2010 some 388,000 baby harp seals were targeted to be butchered and skinned alive by the government-sanctioned 'hunters'.

  • Another Victory for the Seals - The door to one of the largest markets for seal products has now been slammed shut – the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the Russian Federation has banned the import and export of harp seal skins. It’s the biggest victory in the campaign to end commercial sealing since the European Union (EU) banned non-Inuit seal products.

  • @flamedrag18 So if someone were to creep up on you and club you over the head with a big wooden stake with a nail sticking out and then drag you across an ice floe via the hook and finally skin you alive, finally leaving you to die out on the ice in terrible pain that wouldn't be cruel?

If this is so humane why has 95% of the civilised world now banned the import of seal products from Canada?

Read the conclusions of the 2001 IFAW study by 5 independent vets - the seal kill = not humane at all!

Small time? You call the 2008 Canadian slaughter of 217,800 wild seals 'small time'?

Thankfully the European ban on importing seal products is having the desired effect and the 2010 kill figure was down to 67,000 despite the Canadian DFO setting a quota of 330,000 kills.

The world is turning against this despicable trade and there is now little monetary incentive to murder these wild creatures for their skins so with luck this 'hunt' will soon be a thing of the past.

  • Well over 50 now my cousins and I spent all we could on cans of spray paint and we'd go as fast as we could spraying sealpups down their back. It didn't hurt them but it saved pups from being slaughtered cruely. Their carcasses chucked without the fur. I've seen them being skinned while still alive even. All these guys like using bats so it doesn't damage the skin. The one thing on this video didn't let you hear the screams and cries from the pups. Next year if you happen to vacation in the w
