The same process of sweep netting has been used for generations. The net is spread by the boat, called a coble. Then the fishermen pull in the net by hand

  • didt catch much!!

  • @coppersunday The net salmon fisherman seem to be having a better year in 2010.

  • i am a salmon fisherman who fishes the river usk and river taff for salmon and we have seen a very very BIG decline of salmon and sea trout because of people like this. They should be sent to jail for what they are doing. IT IS ILLEGAL TO DO THAT.

  • I'm sure that the net fishing in Berwick upon Tweed must be legal as it is done in full public view.

  • it's not illegal they actually get paid to do it in berwick idiots! a job not a hobby like line fishing or whatever the hell you call it.

  • yup im an angler

  • @danielandlisa

    Are you an Angler?

  • @danielandlisa rong their bud its not illicit at all you will find they have licence like i do to net the forth est!!

line fishers in 2009 took more than netsman!! ime a game keeper and stalker as well as part time gillie so trust me i know what ime on about

  • This is pure greed!! these people should be BANNED. Anglers are not allowed to keep a salmon on the tweed until July and are encouraged by gillies to return fish yet these netsman are allowed to plunder the stocks...10,000 in 2010!!

  • TThe Berwick Salmon Fishing Company was boiught out by the Atlantic Salmon Fishing Trust in about 1987. Hundreds of years of tradition came to an end as all net fishing was stopped. (Surely not to preserve stocks for the landed gentry up river!). It is occasionally seen and will be legal. I think I'm right in saying its illegal to even carry Salmon fishing equipment within 5 miles of the river without good cause.

This is possibly Sandstell. I've seen them fishing from Gardo batt as well.
