Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Strip

On Tuesday, Palestinians awoke to the aftermath of an overnight Israeli airstrike that wounded three gunmen in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military confirmed in a statement that it had carried out direct hits, in response to rocket fired on it.

Israel frequently launches airstrikes against Gaza militant targets in response to rocket shootings at its territory but it was reported that these attacks have seldom caused any casualties in recent months.

Meanwhile, peace talks with Israel were deadlocked for several months, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas still hopes to win U.N. endorsement for the Palestinian claim to statehood in all the Israeli-occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

He will submit an application for full United Nations membership at the General Assembly next month.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Malki said, "The state which wants to be a member of the U.N. should make the request itself, so Palestine should submit the request represented by its president himself who is President Mahmoud Abbas."

Palestinians are also expected to seek an upgrading of their status from observer entity to non-member state.
