The Chad Mitchell Trio, the most vocally accomplished and politically controversial of the 1960s popular folk groups, perform a traditional song collected by American poet Carl Sandburg in the 1920s from their 1964 album "Reflecting." Other well-known versions of the song were recorded by the Kingston Trio, Judy Collins, the late Dave Van Ronk, and more recently Eric Bibb.

  • I'd probably buy the Cd if I didn't have it all in my head. I was actually searching for "The Virgin Mary Had Baby Boy" - again their version is best by far - and Old Bill was just the way i remember vocally. But the bluesy 12 string creams it! Was that a Mitchell or dear Mr mcGuinn? I met him 2 years ago in a Lisbon fado club. Always had a great ear for acoustic quality that lad...

  • @mikecburns - by the time of this album ("Reflecting" - 1964) McGuinn is backing the Limeliters right before running off to start the Byrds. 12 string here is by Paul Prestopino. BTW - "Virgin Mary"is uploaded on my channel. BTW2 - these uploads are for articles on my blog - if you Google "Comparative Video 101 Tell Old Bill" you'll get to an article with this and six other versions of the song.

  • I wish someone would remaster their albums and release them on CD. I'd buy a boxed set priced anywhere under $25 for each album.

  • Hi David - Actually, most of the albums ARE on CD. Go to Amazon, search Chad Mitchell Trio CDs, and you'll find most (but not all) of the original releases. A great group - I saw them two weeks ago in concert here in southern California, and they still sound great (original members and accompanists!).
