"Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, you rollin' river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away. We're bound away
Across the wide Missouri

Now the Missouri is a mighty river
Look away, you rollin' river.
Indians camp along her border
Look away. We're bound away
Across the wide Missouri

Well a white man loved an Indian maiden
Look away, you rollin' river
With notions his canoe was laden
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri

Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Look away, you rollin' river
It was for her I'd cross the water.
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri

For seven long years I courted Sally
Look away, you rollin' river
Seven more years I longed to have her
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri

Well, it's fare-thee-well, my dear,
I'm bound to leave you
Look away you rollin' river
Shenandoah, I will not deceive you
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri"

  • A voice, a voice of such greatest and beauty, reminds me thus: We have not been forsaken by the Lord!

  • maybe God does exist.

  • An interesting voice, certainly, but it's hard for me to call it "great" except in the sense that certain voices with a lot of character (ex. Frankie Laine, Nat King Cole; Tony Bennett; Sinatra) might be called "great." As an operatic bass he certainly wouldn't be in the class of a Jerome Hines or a Samuel Ramey and the terrific (although he had some classical training) pop bass-baritone Tennessee Ernie Ford had an unforced beauty of tone that surpasses Robeson as well.

  • @bondsee with Paul, one will always link his politics to him. It is intertwined with all he stands for and is. Always.

  • Look up bass voice. You should get this.

  • HE IS JOE HILL. ALIVE AS YOU AND ME. HE IS JACOBS LADDER. HE IS

  • Are we kidding? This man had one of the great 3 voices in history! Powerful beyond description, I can only imagine what seeing and hearing this man in person must have been like. Who can compare to this man's presentation of this, Old Man River, or any spiritual?

  • Lovely in every way.
