Heavily inspired by the Richie Kamuca version on his 1957 Quartet album. I mess up the ending so close your ears for that bit. Backing from Body and Soul Aebersold CD/Book

  • Thanks for sharing with us your videos, I to am learning alto sax and you are really inspiring for the easyness and casual way you turn sequences of notes into pure pleasure! May I ask you what kind of mic you are using? Is it connected to the computer? DO you use any program to manipulate sound (echoes atc)?

  • Thanks for the kind words, my recording set up is simple. I use garageband with an alesis 1402 firewire interface and a rode nt2a mic. I use a little reverb only, again added in garageband. Garageband is mac only, but you can use audacity on a pc

  • do you play the Aebersold base in background, listening to it in your headset and mixing with the sax trace in GB? Or do you first record the sax (with base in h.set) and then load in GB both base and sax, adjusting tempo and effects?

Sorry for asking so many questions but I am really interested in doing some home recording and I'd like to start with the right steps...

  • I first load the Aebersold backing track into GB, then I monitor the backing track in the headphones while recording the sax. This means I only record the sax on track 2, so I can adjust the levels and reverb without spill from the backing.

  • i play alto thinking of maybe trying out the tenor for a bit

im afraid of loosing the lips for alto

  • Some people can do both...I am finding it difficult. Try and borrow one for a while :-)

  • Great job. Yes you do remind me of Richie Kamuca and to some extent, at least in the first few bars, Stan Getz. You improvisation while not losing the melody was very good. I play tenor sax and trombone and am doing some recording at home as well. Pretty much use the same setup but with Acoustica Studio Pro and MMO backing tracks. Thanks for posting your rendition of What's New. One of my favorites

  • How long have you been playing the sax? Great sound.
