'The Music Biz' documentary feature
Clip from the B B C documentary 'The Music Biz', episode 1 - "The Deal", aired 15 May 1995.
Aimee talks about her troubles with record companies. The clip is 6:40 minutes.
The concert footage in it is from London Shepherd's Bush Empire 28 April 1994.
Aimee Mann is one of my favorite songwriters. How dare anyone have treated her poorly. The woman is a gem!!

It's what brought down the auto industry in America. and it's what's wrong with where I work. Faggots that sit in chairs and collect the majority of payroll and if you say anything (step out of line) your life can be made difficult. If Y2K ever did happen, these chair people would be the wild dogs at the fringes of the campfire hoping for a scrap to be thrown their way. Caging a bird like Amiee Mann? Your the antithesis of music.

Consolation prize: cut to 2008, the biz with all their tone deaf, clueless "A & R" reps. and their infinite non-wisdom, have succeeded in destroying themselves from the inside out. The future is independence, self promotion, internet and touring, and soon there will be no need for these business hacks that spend the artists royalties on inflated expense accounts, first class flights, lunches and lap dances. One can only hope that the major labels all go bust so we can discover real artists again

Um....she went "independent" in 1999 by starting her own label and sold over 200,000 copies of Bachelor #2 (and those sales figures are YEARS old.....not sure what the number is now). She's since released 4 more albums on her own label.
"Go real".....she's always been real. At the time this interview took place, she was on Imago, which WAS an independent label distributed by BMG.

Only corporations hold the keys to the castle. Now, with "free music" on the net and CD burning, there's almost no record business. Has anyone seen music get better? I haven't.

A truly unique and gifted person. Glad to know she refuses to become just another MTV, cookie cutter type sellout. I rarely listen to the radio anymore or even purchase CD's because the bands all sound alike to me. There's not much originality left anymore.
