The Human Voice Synopsis

A young woman has been interrupted during a telephone call from her lover of five years. He has abandoned her and is to marry another woman the following day. This is the last time they will speak to each other. During the conversation, we learn that the woman has attempted suicide. The phone service in Paris being notoriously poor during that era, they are interrupted several times during the agonizing conversation.

La Voix humaine / The Human Voice is a one-act opera for one character, with music by Francis Poulenc to a libretto by Jean Cocteau, based on his 1932 play. La Voix humaine was first performed at the Opéra-Comique, Salle Favart in Paris on 6 February 1959. Poulenc wrote the opera for Denise Duval, the French soprano, and the premiere was conducted by Georges Prêtre.

Other sopranos who have essayed the role include Karan Armstrong, Dame Josephine Barstow, Dame Gwyneth Jones, Catherine Malfitano, Audra McDonald, Julia Migenes, Maralin Niska, Jessye Norman, Magda Olivero, Renata Scotto, Anja Silja, Elisabeth Söderström, Phyllis Treigle and Galina Vishnevskaya.

  • Thank you!

  • Indeed, it was translated into English.

  • @voicetechvocalizing By whom and is this translation available?

  • @hamiltonbenjaminf

unfortunately, this translation is not available. it was done by a private party. We have lost contact and I don't know how to find it. It is very likey that new translations have been made. This was done in 1984.

  • It's an opera by a French composer, Poulenc.

  • I'm guessing she eats the stuff there on the nightstand, calls 911 "just in time", then tells everyone you drove her to it

Is there anyone among us who doesn't want to take that phone and beat her to death with it?

  • @MisZing YEP, love this a lot. So good when you can make out the words, one reson Larmore isn't one of my faves. Karen Oleson? Had never heard of her before this...any other pieces to look out for with her?

  • Wow, great voice, and wonderful diction, I understand every word! I know it's originally in French, but I also like to understand what it's about, so English is not so bad.

  • La Voix Humaine...one singer, on act opera by Poulenc. This was obviously translated into English.

  • what's this
