CERES propagates heirloom plants for our market gardens, nursery, local retailers and farmers markets. Seeds are collected from a diverse range of non hybrid, open pollinated plants.

Each week groups of volunteers work with the Propagation Team to grow organic herb and vegetable seedlings. These are later planted in the Honey Lane and Merri Creek Market Gardens or sold at the CERES Nursery.

This project sustains urban agriculture by saving seeds and propagating seedlings for productive use.

Biodiversity encompasses the variety of all living things -- plants, animals, micro-organisms and the ecosystems they form. Greater diversity of species and ecosystems creates greater resilience. CERES propagates open pollinated plants, including many heirloom varieties. Each week groups of committed volunteers work with the Propagation Team growing organic vegetable seedlings, herbs and other fruiting plants. These are sold at the CERES Nursery and Local Farmers Markets and planted in the Honey Lane and Merri Creek market gardens. We also sell to other retail nurseries and organic farmers.

Organic farming methods work with natural systems and nurture biodiversity. Rich organic soils grow healthy plants that are more able to cope with disease and pests and are more drought-tolerant. The CERES Propagation project works towards making our urban agriculture system more sustainable by preserving the biodiversity of food plants.

Seed saving
CERES also has a Seed Savers Group on site. The group distributes and exchanges locally adapted open pollinated seeds and other planting materials.
