  • @MOconnorclan It was battery powered and it was a an old first alert. I finally found the commercial. The commercial from about 1979 was on youtube for a while but it looks like it was removed. The light on the smoke alarm provided enough light to light up a dark hallway. The GE smoke alarm was actually featured in that commercial but it was advertising First Alert.

  • @JME1973 is the smoke alarm your talking about hardwired or battery powered?

  • Awesome! Where can I find a home sentry smoke alarm? I want one for my collection.

  • Is there anything GE can't do?

  • Buy what from me, Crazy? The smoke alarm? It was tossed out quite awhile ago, when they stopped manufacturing the battery for this particular unit. They stopped making the battery, because it contained mercury, and I guess it was an environmental hazard.

  • This was from a CBC "Hockey Night in Canada" broadcast, as I can tell at the beginning of this clip.

  • I also remember seeing a commercial in the late 1970's about smoke alarms and I believe it was for General Electric but not sure. The alarm featured had a screechy sound and it lit up when the alarm sounded. They were circular shaped. Does anyone know anything on these alarms? I have tried to find them on ebay and look for info on them online but I can't find anything.

  • I am guess that the lights came on because the people in the house woke up. That is just my guess though. These were neat alarms back in the day. I agree the sound they made would get a person's attention. It is a far cry from the smoke detectors of today.

  • they don't beep when they sound it's more of a high pitched screech. i would have the shit scared out of me if it ever whent off. and why are all the lights coming on in the house?

  • You asked me how frequently the battery needed to be changed. It was about once per year.
