The Battle of Marathon , Greek 'Μάχη τοῡ Μαραθῶνος' , 'Mache tou Marathonos' , took place in 490 BC and was the culmination of King Darius I of Persia's first major attempt to conquer the remainder of Greece and incorporate it into the Persian Empire, to secure the weakest portion of his western border. Most of what is known of this battle comes from Herodotus.

Darius first sent Mardonius, in 492 BC, via a land route to Europe to strengthen Persia's hold of Thrace and Macedon, which had been weakened by the Ionian Revolt. Although successful, most of this force perished in a storm off Mount Athos, and the remainder was forced to return to Asia, losing men along the way.[1] In 490 BC, Datis and Artaphernes were sent in a maritime operation to subjugate the Cyclades islands in the central Aegean and punish Eretria and Athens for their assistance in the Ionian revolt. Eretria was besieged and fell; then the fleet landed in Marathon bay. There they were defeated by a small force of Athenian and Plataean hoplites, despite their numerical advantage. The long run of the messenger who conveyed news of the victory to Athens became the inspiration for the marathon race, which was first staged at the 1896 Olympic Games.

  • The Persians are so unfortunate that their enemies have written their history. :/ (Most Persian books were destroyed by Arabs)

  • For decades Greece had supported Pirates and raided Persian merchant ships. For decades had they made attacks on Persian soil. But Persia tried to be honest and paid them money.

"'But in 498 B.C The Athenians supported the Ionian revolt and killed thousand of persians in Sardis. (That was just like 9/11 for the Persians.)

Persia got angry and wanted to punish Athens" Absolotuly unhistorical. Somebody like to write his own history. Nobody Historian says this.

  • pure anti persian

  • the greeks was very good militaries

  • @tasosxaritou Every nation has their time of dominance. When the British Empire was ruling the waves, the Greeks were under Ottoman rule. Rome was once the powerhouse, but it the 1930s, the Italians were defeated by Ethiopians. Modern Greece is not the same culturally or politically as Ancient Greece. "The past is another country" (LP Hartley).

  • @SnakesWithGuns Yeye, so all other historians are talking shit and their evidence are wrong while that prick Herodotus is right? Claiming that Persia lost 8000 soldiers while greece only lost 160?

I cant believe that historicans still believe at that guy, while other more serious historicans like Xenophon are ignored...

  • @VictumRoManius ok thats completely false but whatever

  • You know why Darius I invaded Greece?

(Persia did NOT supported slavery and granted rights to woman. Greece did that not)

  • You should choose "Parthia" as Persians! they are "Pontus"!

  • in reality the greeks didnt march into battle in a phalanx. They ran about a miles length into the persians army. persians didnt run into them..good video thought i liked it
